Each Semester is a Fresh Start
Regardless of how your previous semester turned out, it’s time to look forward. Whether you enlist the services of an Academic Life Coach or not, here are steps you can take to start your semester off on the right foot.
BEFORE CLASSES BEGIN…
Do your research. You probably won’t receive your syllabi before the first day of class, but if you do - study it now. If not, attempt to contact others who have had the class and get tips on how to start the semester and what to expect. Seek out students who have the same class as you do and form study groups right away.
Create your schedule now. Develop your weekly plan in Google Calendar to include class times, supplemental instruction times that are offered, and any free or paid tutoring available. Access your university’s academic calendar and add any important dates. Add habits you would like to establish like working out or weekly study sessions for each class.
Get organized. Be sure you have all the supplies you need. Organize your personal study space, backpack, and digital files. Having a clutter-free environment can improve focus and productivity. Delete or archive all the emails from the previous semester.
Review previous classes. If your courses build on previous knowledge, take some time to review relevant materials to refresh your understanding.
Create a budget. If you are managing your own finances, build your spending plan for the semester. Include textbooks, supplies, entertainment, food, etc.
AFTER CLASSES BEGIN…
Enter all due dates. Set aside time to go through every single syllabus and online resource to enter due dates for every class into your calendar for the ENTIRE semester - including finals.
Look forward. Determine each class's larger projects or assignments and begin to map out your plan for completing them. Knowing what to expect and having a preliminary plan will keep you from being surprised and overwhelmed by those. Planning is the key to your entire semester.
Begin with the end in mind. Determine which classes have comprehensive finals. Study and prepare appropriately. Build your quiz tools every week as you go instead of waiting until just before exams. Use spaced repetition to test yourself each week.
Prioritize self-care. You’ve heard it before. Maintain your health by getting enough sleep, eating well, and exercising regularly. Taking care of your physical and mental well-being is crucial for academic success.
Every semester offers a new perspective and opportunity to be successful. Build your arsenal of tools to make it happen.
